Paragraph.
  • 8th Grade Farewell Dance
The theme is........ Black & White Ball!!!   Friday, May 22nd
  • Student Council Money Jar Shuffle  Each grade level will have two huge change jars (one for pennies and one for all other change and dollar bills) on the stage in the cafeteria during lunch periods the week of March 23 - April 3.

    1.       Students will be instructed that placing a penny in their grade’s penny jar will earn a point for their grade.

    2.       Placing a quarter, dime or nickel into any other grade’s change jar will cause that grade level to lose points. For example a quarter will cause a loss of 5 points; a dime: 3 points and a nickel will cause a loss of 2 points. Dollar bills will cause a loss of 25 points!

    3.       At the end of the week points will be totaled and whichever grade has the most points will win a prize.

    4.       Updates will be on the news daily to show which grade level is ahead.

    5.       The winning grade level will receive a free 8th period outside with ice-cream.

    6.       So, bring your pennies for points and your silver change and dollars to sabotage the other grade levels each day at lunch.

Safety Week
Student Council will be holding our first annual Safety Week during the week of February 23-27, 2009
Monday: Angel Day
We will kick off the week with Angel Day on Monday. To parallel statistics that indicate every 21 minutes a person in the United States is killed by either a drug or alcohol related incident, our Student Council officers will alternate turns acting as the Grim Reaper along with our on campus police officer to “kill” a pre-determined Student Council member every 21 minutes. After the student is called briefly in the hall, the “deceased” students will have their faces painted white, cannot talk for the remainder of the day, and will wear a sign around their neck explaining that “John Smith was killed by (incident) at (time).” Also, in front of the school we will be creating a mock cemetery for the “victims.” Student Council members have made gravestones to be placed in the middle of the grassy area by the Deerpark M.S. sign.  The students will be able to see and feel the loss of a fellow student as a result of a drug or alcohol related death and will hopefully deter others from using substances.

Tuesday: Buddy Up for Safety –  TWIN DAY
*Dress up like aTWIN with your friend!
*D.A.S.H. will construct a mock cemetery for Angel Day victims on the DMS front lawn before school @ 7:45 a.m.

 Wednesday: Safety Tips

*Posters presented around campus and on along the front driveway
Thursday:Green 6000 Day
*StuCo members will pass a neck-worn signs that say “6000 Teens Die Each Year from a Drug or Alcohol Related Incident” sign to you if you’re wearing green then if you see someone else wearing green, you get to pass it on, too! Goal: everyone passes the signs

Friday: Seatbelt Check
*Are you a Smartie or a Dum Dum?
*StuCo members will be checking driver and passenger seatbelts before school.

We had a wonderful time over the weekend of November 21-22 at the annual Student Council State Convention in downtown Austin! Several of our council members represented Deerpark by doing an outstanding job presenting in front of a large group about what DMS will be doing for Heritage Week (coming up in April).

On Friday and Saturday students attended sessions to learn about activities other student councils around the state are doing on their campuses. They learned a lot and had such a good time! We’re very proud of our members. They’re going to do great things for this school!
